Drum Circle Lessons for Social Emotional Learning-Peace

$6.00

This drum circle activity allows students to express peace through an eight-step protocol that includes a mindful minute, story, warm-up, rhythmic building blocks, call and response, and room for singing, moving, and playing the drums. At the end of the lesson, students show gratitude toward one another and the instruments and reflect on their experiences. This activity can be adapted for various classrooms including home school and music classrooms, and is great for morning meetings that general educators may find appealing. If drums are unavailable, this activity works well with found sounds around the home or classroom, and can also be used with body percussion and voice. Students practice cooperation by creating a beat together and self-expression by choosing rhythms that demonstrate how they experience peace within themselves. This research-based protocol includes six lessons that align with the CASEL 5 competencies of self-awareness, self-management, responsible decision-making, relationship skills, and social awareness that foster the agency, identity, and belonging of students.
